When I discovered Parajanov’s film “The Color of Pomegranates” all bets were off. Here was this Soviet-based artist that much like any creative activist was all but forced to create mindless propaganda film works that would not only provide reliable income, but keep him safe from the rigid politics that he faced if he did attempt anything remotely independent. It wasn’t until he saw a film that changed his life forever that he finally understood that the spirit of what he had to bring to the table was worth the risk and punishment.
My artwork titled “Pomegranates” is a tribute to not only the creative imagery and intent that Parajanov poured into their work, but the activism that I shared when learning more about this stunning film.
Being a queer artist, I knew that in its design I wanted this piece to be outlined with red @culturehustle ink infused with the blood of gay men who were refused the right to donate. Incorporating layers of tulle skin to show the beauty in the thin-skinned (the deep feelers, the anti-avoidants, the sensitive) with Russian veil netting (self marriage) and hand-cast & sculpted scroll work etched in black Venetian lace all placed on a mirror; beckoning the viewer to See themselves in the Art. It’s a piece about feeling the depths, accepting the risks and seeing the radical in ourselves.
